About Us

For many years Shingle Creek United Methodist Church has been the “best kept secret in Osceola County.” Founded in 1865 by the pioneer families who originally settled Osceola County, the Shingle Creek Church has been a place where folks have come to be fed. That feeding has been of a spiritual nature, of course, but we also feed our neighbors through our Bread Ministry, Food Pantry, covered dish dinners and Spaghetti Suppers. The hungry have always found sustenance here, and that’s what the Church is about: feeding the hungry, helping the lost, and being the hands, feet and face of Jesus Christ to the world.

Much like our ever-changing community, this church has also changed. Thankfully we no longer worship under a brush arbor— we like our air conditioning just fine, than you very much. Over the past 142 years, our ten-acre campus has grown from a solitary church dwelling to six buildings

The physical lay of the land is not the only change this community of faith has undergone. Unfortunately, gone from our membership rolls are most of the founding family names such as Bronson, Overstreet, and Babb. While these saints have moved on to greater glory or other congregational families, they have been replaced with new saints, good and faithful servants whose prime directive is to fulfill the Great Commission and serve our Lord by serving the community.

Our fast-paced 24/7 society continually challenges us to be ever aware of the changing demographics and social challenges that our area has encountered through this mind-blowing growth. By offering worship services and small group Bible study meetings in both English and Spanish, and continuing to minister to our children and youth, we feel committed to staying in tune with the Holy Spirit so we don’t lose our focus and forget our vision.

In Psalm 145:4 we find these words: “One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” This scripture was the basis for the theme of the 2007 Florida Annual Conference this past June, aptly titled “From Generation to Generation.” Truly this speaks for this community of believers. As the founding families have passed on this precious church and its’ mission to us, we must now prepare ourselves and the next generation for discipleship.
